Send//Receive (2017)

As solitude decreases with the aid of technology and digital communication, our feelings of isolation seemingly increase. These minimal, post-apocalyptic landscapes embedded with cellphone respondent light, draw connections between the social and political impact of technology on modern society - drawing their titles from the time stamps of tweets. 

Using simple antennas and an op-amp circuit, these works pick up the radio-waves sent between cell towers and our phones, to trigger LED lights embedded in the works. These frequencies are the same ones that cause a snapping and crackling noise when phones are plugged into speakers and receive or send a text message.

Chem_trials (2016)

This body of work draws from conspiracy theorists, the politics and of course what I saw above me - to explore the implications of increasing air traffic. Our increasing ability to navigate airspace; through developments like drone, plane and satellite technology, signify drastic adaptation to our notions of ownership, power and global responsibility.

These works and a video collaboration with Zach Bruce were completed during residency at STRUTS Gallery and Faucet Media Arts Center in July 2016.

Forces (American Landscapes) (2017)

Views of tent cities - those communities made of tents, tarps, and anything else useful for urban survival, populating underpasses, inviting (or not) public places - were burned into my mind when I first moved to Portland OR. I was amazed by their abundance (not as common in Canada for various reasons) but, more significantly, after a year or so, I realized I stopped noticing them all together. I had lost some of my sensitivity to the existence and suffering of those around me. A most humbling realization.

I made these works in the first three months of the 2016 US Presidential Election - they were my first experimentation embedding lights and technology into my work.
